Getting there
Montecchio Maggiore sits beside the A4 motorway between Verona and Venice, 13 km from Vicenza. Here is how to get there by plane, train, bus and car, and how to get around the Veneto.
Verona Villafranca airport is the closest, about 45 minutes away by car. Venice Marco Polo has more international flights and is about an hour and a quarter away. Treviso is used by some budget airlines.
| From | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Verona airport | Car, or bus to Verona station and train | About 45 minutes by car |
| Venice airport | Car, or bus to Mestre and train to Vicenza | About 1¼ hours by car |
| Vicenza | Bus, taxi or car | About 20–30 minutes |
| Venice | Train to Vicenza, then bus or taxi | About 1½ hours |
| Milan | Train to Vicenza, then bus or taxi | About 2½ hours |
Montecchio Maggiore has no station of its own. Vicenza, on the Milan–Venice line, has fast and regional trains, and Altavilla-Tavernelle, about 5 km from the town, has regional trains. From either, continue by bus or taxi. Check timetables on the Trenitalia and Italo websites or apps.
Local buses link Montecchio Maggiore with Vicenza and the surrounding towns. Services are less frequent in the evening and on Sundays.
The A4 motorway between Milan, Verona and Venice has an exit for Montecchio Maggiore. A car makes it easy to reach the castles, the villas and the hills. Pay motorway tolls at the booths, and avoid driving into the ZTL zones of historic centres.
